I'm sure you've heard it or some form of it, stated in an apologetic manner by the "advanced beginner" (hand or machine knitter) to explain something about his or her progress in knitting. I've read or heard it three times in the last week, the most recent being today. It prompted me to write this post!
The beginner knitter doesn't apologize. The happy beginner is proud (and should be) of each completed row. The intermediate knitter may be easing into sweaters or lace and is usually excited by the challenge.
But there are some knitters who think of themselves as being stuck in a scarf rut. These are the knitters I am addressing.
Do not look to me to pull you out of that rut! I encourage you to explore it more thoroughly. The scarf is the perfect object for learning advanced stitch patterns. Once you learn a new method or technique, how is it that you improve? Practice. A washcloth is too small; a shawl takes much commitment. A scarf is the goldilocks vehicle. Become a scarf specialist.
Only knit scarves? Say it with pride.
